San Quintin Update

This fish report is from Pete Hillis, reporting out of Pedro's Pangas, San Quintin, Baja Mexico for the weekend ending 5/13/07.

I sure wish I had a better report--we had a bad weekend. The winds started Friday and were still blowing as of Sunday morning. The few boats that did get out did get the usual limits of rock cod and ling cod and Humboldt squid. I expect a full weekend next week--and possibly we will scare up a little yellowtail.

Thanks.

We had eight boats out this weekend. Winds blew up to Friday but died down for the weekend. Still no yellowtail but big bonita, Humboldt squid, and over limits of large rock cod.

Thanks.

I talked to Captain Hector by phone Sunday morning, and the winds are staying calm for us. A few more anglers showed this weekend and we got 9 boats out this week but still only rock cod and ling cod and good bass fishing at the island and San Ramon.

Thanks.

Boreas (the Greek God of the North Wind) was good to us this week but only a few fishermen. Most of the anglers came for our great rock cod fishing and no one left disappointed. Our landing had no yellowtail and I heard nothing from the other landings to report different. Just limits, limits, and more limits of large rock cod and large ling cod. The ling cod are still preferring the live bait or the scrambled egg jigs at the 240 and 15 fathom.

Thanks.

I hate to sound repetitious but our report is pretty much the same as last week's. The weather was great during the week but Friday evening the winds started kicking up and blew out most of the fishing on Saturday and Sunday.

Rich Blazick from Arizona took a group out on Thursday and Friday loaded up on large rock cod and ling cod, but no yellowtail reported. They got brought onboard some of those large squids which were pretty much taking anything that went down. And because of that they give you some good action, but Rich and his group stayed in that area only for a short time until moving on.

We are just hoping for better weather this week and a better fish report for your readers.

Thanks.

A Happy Easter to all.

I talked to Captain Hector on Sunday morning, and this week we had off and on winds. We had 2 boats out Friday and Saturday and one going out on Sunday. Boats on Friday and Saturday loaded up on large rock cod and ling cod, but no yellowtail reported. We are just hoping for better weather this week and a better fish report for your readers.

Thanks.

This fish report is from Pete Hillis reporting out of Pedro's Pangas, San Quintin, Baja Mexico for the weekend of March 23, 2007.

The famous San Quintin winds blew on and off like crazy this week. Anglers that braved the winds were successful getting out of the bay and scored some great catches at the 180 spot and the 15 fathom.

Captain Hector took the Rommy out to the 180. Fishing with him was a group out of Santee, CA comprised of Andy McDuffee, Michael Barton, and Michael Barton, Jr. They managed to load up on nice rock cod, a few lings, and some giant squid. While out there, we received reports that one private boat brought in a white seabass in the mouth of the bay at approximately 45 lbs. Unfortunately, our boats couldn't duplicate the catch and it was the only one we have a report on.

Hope to see all in Del Mar for the Fred Hall Fish & Tackle Show. Look for me at the Baja Tourism booth.

Thanks.

Wind and cold weather kept most boats in. Out of all the landings, we only saw 4 boats launched all weekend. Received reports of limits of rock cod and a few ling cod.

Hope to see some of you at the Del Mar Show and hope we have more for you next week.

Thanks.

Not much to report this week. Mild winds. Boats that did go out got rock cod, ling cod and whitefish at the 15 fathom and the 240.

FYI only: I have been working the booth at the Fred Hall Fish Show for Baja Tourism. On Sunday, Lorenzo from Campo De Lorenzo, and I will be working the booth. Hope to see you there.

Winds came to town on Tuesday through Thursday, but settled down Friday for a good weekend of fishing. Talking to Captain Hector via telephone on Sunday morning, we had three boats go out on Saturday and Sunday. All boats fished the 15 fathom and the 240 spot and averaged three yellowtail per boat, 16 to 20 lbs. They also had limits of large rock cod and ling cod and a few white fish. The giant squid are still around but after one or two, the boats are moving to get away from them.

Baja Tourism will have a booth at the Fred Hall Tackle Show in Long Beach and San Diego. I'll be a booth on and off both weekends. Hope to you and your readers there.

Thanks.

The fishing has been great although still not too many anglers down south. This week we had Oscar Guzman from Ensenada and Raul Oscena from Visailia fished on the Rommy with Hector and invited me along as a deckhand. We fished the 15 and the 6 for real large rock cod, ling cod and 6 Humboldt squid. I got tired of ganyon fishing real fast and changed to a Salas 6X scrambled egg and got the only yellowtail of the day at 18 lbs. Also the largest rock cod, ling cod and squid were caught on my rod - Only 1 a time but a lot more fun!

The wind blew Monday and Tuesday with showers on Wednesday. It flattened out on Thursday and that's the day we went out. I talked to Captain Hector Sunday morning and there was no wind, calm seas but extremely cold. Ice on the windshields of the boats.

Thanks.

People looking for a long weekend could not have asked for a more perfect weekend. The weather in San Quintin produced great weather and the San Quintin winds left us alone as well.

Of particular note, we had Al Leburd, Bob Collins, and Jack Hill traveling from Chula Vista. They went out on the Rommy with Captain Hector and landed limits of large rock cod, ling cod and white fish. They also had a nice haul of four giant squid at 45 lbs. As of this report Sunday morning, they were headed out to try their luck on surface action, hoping to find some nice yellowtail.

Thanks.

Not much to report this week--not many anglers down for the weekend. The weather has been great--no winds to write about. When I left Wednesday for the states, I ran into some light rain. On Tuesday, a local fisherman brought in 3 black seabass which were caught on live bait at the mouth of the bay while fishing for halibut. The fish weighed 85, 65 and 50 lbs.

Otherwise, local fishing at the 240 and 15 fathom were producing limits of rock cod and ling cod. Only 2 yellowtail seen all week long, 16 to 20 lbs.

Thanks.

Mark Mayo, Tom Stevenson, and Mike Stevenson from Long Beach and San Fernando Valley, California, came to San Quintin in hopes of catching some Rock Cod. Well Rock Cod is exactly what they got! They fished two days with Miguel on the Pelicano at the 240 spot. They not only loaded up with Rock Cod but also Ling Cod and six giant squid (Humbolt Squid).

Also out fishing was Jim Nolan and Bill McLaughlin. Jim and Bill brought down their families from Buena Park, California. They fished on the Rommy and Skipjack with Hector and Gato as their captains. Fishing down south towards Socorro, these two families brought in limits of Sandbass and White Fish. Also, Dawn Nolan brought in a good size yellowtail that weighed in at 22 lbs.

The weather has been calm, no wind at all. The mornings and evenings have been very cold, but oce the sun is out it warms up and turns into a beautiful day.

Thanks.

The report this week is more about the bad weather. We had on and off winds and rain, high seas. In fact, two Americans got their vessels caught on the rocks at San Martin Island.

The weather finally calmed down Friday. We had 2 boats out Saturday and they went out for the rock cod. Mixed in with their catch were some bonita and barracuda. Two boats went out today(Sunday) to see if the yellowtail were still out at Ben's Rock and the 15 fathom. Before the rough seas, previous catch at these locations were good for yellowtail in the 15 to 20 lb. class. As of this report, no radio contact with the captains to see how they were doing.

If weather settles down, we hope to have a better report for you next weekend.

Thanks.

Don't have too much to report this week. We are getting a good halibut bite in the bay and yellowtail are still at the 15 fathom and Ben's Rock. The wind came in Thursday night and as of this report, winds died down on Saturday. Sunday morning we have near perfect conditions - no wind and calm seas.

Thanks.

Weather has definitely changed to cooler temperatures. We had 2 hours of rain Sunday early a.m. but conditions cleared with blue skies and no winds.

Four boat out this weekend. All boats opted to go for bottom fishing with limits of big rock cod and ling cod at the 240 spot. One private boater went in late Saturday afternoon and found a late yellowtail bite at the 15 fathom and brought in 10 such yellowtail, ranging 18 to 22 lbs.

Thanks.

Weather has been great this week. Captain Hector says it has been getting a little cooler in the evenings and early mornings. Travelers to the area should be prepared to dress warm for the trip out of the bay. Again, not too many fisherman this week; however, John Yasui from San Diego brought 2 friends and fished on the Pelicano with Captain Miguel for limits and more of large rock cod and ling cod.

No boats from my landing have been down south so nothing to report. Most fishermen have been concentrating on the large rock cod and ling cod.

Thanks.

Not too many anglers this weekend. Heavy fog in the mornings made for a slow ride out of the bay. Captain Hector fished south on one day and loaded up the Rommy on sand bass with 1 yellowtail at 20 lbs. He saw a private boater next to him bring in one white seabass, approximately 30 lbs. Other boats that fished up north towards the 240 and 15 fathom loaded up on large rock cod and ling cod.

Thanks.
